It is Austria that most inspired and impressed US soldiers during World War II. It was the most beautiful place in all of Europe so said many a GI. Also, of course, it is the place from which Hitler came. It is no wonder that, looking at the beauty surrounding him as a child, Adolf Schicklgruber wished to be an artist. I always wonder what would have happened if Adolf had simply been accepted by the Arts Institute to which he applied with all his hopes and dreams riding on the application. Perhaps the horror that he later perpetrated on the world would have simply dissolved into a collection of unknown mediocre art.
