What a fantastic article about original and most beautifuly Penn Station. The travesty that is there now is a terrible place to try and get around in (believe me I know.

Too bad the fathers of NYC did not have the presence of mind to keep this building standing! What a pity!! :(

  2. Dan, on a recent trip to Paris I discovered a most beautiful rail station that avoided the wrecking ball: the Gare d’Orsay which became the Musee d’Orsay, housing a magnificent collection of Impressionist and Post Impressionists works. Perhaps in this country we have a long way to go regarding our architectural heritage. But reality is a strong and destructive force. Think about the great manor houses in England once homes to mighty barons but now forced to open their places for tourists and accommodations. Adapt or die I suppose.

Hi Sally – no, these photos are all available under the Public Domain, as they all come from the United States National Park Service.

    Hi Dan,
Is the image of Penn Station ruins, at the top of the post, also a park of the NPS collection? Could you please let me know how you found that image?

    Thanks so much!
    Cat

HI Cat – to be completely honest, I'm not 100% sure where I found that one. However a quick Google search brings up: http://blog.lostmag.com/2005/06/new-yorks-first... which is where I most probably grabbed it from. If this image is a violation, I'm more than happy to remove it.
