Time Turns Elastic – Acoustic Version

I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest fan of the first single released off Phish’s upcoming album, Joy.  At least I wasn’t until I heard this gorgious acoustic version Trey’s people posted over at Vimeo 20 days ago.

Time Turns Elastic – Acoustic Barn Demo from Trey Anastasio on Vimeo.

This is, in a word, beautiful.  It gives me a new found respect for this work, and makes me want to listen again and again, not just to the words, but perhaps on an even geekier note, what tuning is he using?  Sounds like DADGAD, but I could be way off.

I’m not sure what is is about the amplified version that bugs me, but there’s something.  Maybe it seems almost a bit ‘overdone’?  Perhaps there’s just a bit too much going on.  I’m not 100% sure.  I’ve listened to both the upcoming studio version as well as the 4 other appearances the song made on the recent early summer tour, and I have to say, this acoustic version beats them all.  Hands down.

If you’re so inclined, as a point of comparison, here’s the studio version:

First, thank you for posting this video. I cant stop watching. Also, I believe in this video, Trey’s acoustic is tuned to and open G (DGDGBD). This is the same tuning he used for Radon Balloon.
    Again, thanks for sharing.

Ooooo….nice call on the tuning – I’ve never used that one, will have to give it a try. Having said that, I’m sure there’s no way I’ll ever manage Trey’s style, but alternate tunings are great ways to lead to your own compositions. Thanks again bro.

I am quite certain that the tuning is CGCEAC for the studio and live versions. In this video it sounds a little lower than that (all strings down by an extra half step so C becomes B, etc).

I like this version much better than the electric version… he just squeaks SO much acoustically.

The tuning for this is absolutely in B.

    (B,Gb,B,Eb,Ab,B)

Hey Justin. The problem with that theory is that the key of B has 5 #’s. Likewise, the first appearance of Gb would be in the key of Dd major/Bb minor.

There is no key signature that will give you a Gb while still maintaining a B natural.

I think that what justin means is:

    B F# B D# G# B

The song is in the key of B; open B makes sense.

Ahhh….now that DOES make much more sense (sorry Justin – note to self, drink coffee before responding to comments).

I’ll break out the 6 stringer this eve and give it a retune.

If anyone is interested, my tab is up at http://emilstabs.org/wiki/index.php/Time_Turns_Elastic . The CGCEAC tuning is correct for the studio version, and the B tuning (as written by Jon above) is correct for the acoustic version shown here.

I see now, my theory knowledge isn't the greatest but yes that is without a doubt the right tuning. Also, I'm playing along with the studio version and this video version both still seem to be to be in B. Not really sure what you are all saying about two different tunings.
