  1. Interesting article! Thanks for sharing.

    can’t you just get a paper clip and push the force eject button that’s hidden on one side of the drive to get the disk out. Then you wouldn’t have to restart twice. Really helpful and informative article though! I hadn’t thought of doing that before. It just sucks that in the middle of the install you have to pull an indiana jones with power button.

    Thanks for the kudos dylan! I know on windows machines there’s usually the hidden button/paper clip trick, but if the same mechanism exists on a mac – I’ll be damned if I can find it.

    Agreed, it is a bit ‘say wha now?’ regarding the indiana jones move (nice way of putting it, btw), and given that DVD drives failing on macbooks is a known issue, you’d figure apple would make something like this a bit clearer.

    Is it possible for one mac (the target) to be an intel while the host is a powerpc?

  5. Dan Taylor says:

    Sadly, it looks like you can go from Intel based to PPC, but not vice-versa.

  6. I am in the same situation you are/were and your notes are extremely useful.
    I would imagine one could buy an external DVD drive for a lot less than the system drive replacement, and that would serve as well?

  7. Dan Taylor says:

    Hi Rob! Yes, you’re correct…purchasing an external DVD drive would do the trick for everyday usage/burning, but remember, if it’s USB based, you still wouldn’t be able to use it to reinstall the OS. OSX can only boot from firewire based devices.

    I just wanted to clarify. I have a PPC I need to reinstall, so can I do that using an iMac with your trick?

  9. Dan Taylor says:

    PPC -> Intel = Success
    Intel -> PPC = FAIL
